The First 25 Years: Why Experience and Consequences Shape the Brain
As a teacher, I’ve always been fascinated by how kids learn. Watching those “aha!” moments unfold in my classroom never gets old. But the more I dive into brain science, the more I realize those moments are not just about learning a math problem or finishing a book. They’re about how the brain is wired to grow through experience, especially in the first 25 years of life. And let me tell you that wiring is deeply influenced by consequences—both good and bad.

In other words, the lessons we learn during this time have a lasting impact on how we make decisions for the rest of our lives.
Why Consequences Matter

As a teacher, I see this play out daily. A student forgets to do their homework and misses recess. Giving kids responsibility for their decisions and letting them face the natural consequences of those decisions helps their brains wire for better choices. As adults, we often complain about bad habits or poor decisions, but how often do we stop to think about the experiences, or lack of them, that shaped those patterns? The good news is that while neuroplasticity is most powerful in those first 25 years, it doesn’t disappear entirely. Adults can still rewire their brains, but it takes much more effort, focus, and intentionality.
For our kids, though, the process happens naturally daily. The more we let them experience the consequences of their actions and teach them the science behind why their brains respond the way they do, the better equipped they’ll be to navigate life’s challenges. And who knows, maybe they’ll even grow up to appreciate the teacher who let them learn the hard way now and then.
